ImageIf the beautiful playing surface set in the leafy surroundings of semi-rural Ibaraki wasn't enough to tip us off that our opposition was going to be a bit good, then two tries in the first seven minutes from our nemesis the rolling maul should have driven the point home.  Such was the story of the first 40 minutes.  Impeccably controlled line-outs and mauls, resulting in tries as boring to watch as they were excellent in their efficiency.

YCAC 10s (Wednesday) and game V YCAC (Sunday)

Image There's something unnerving about a trip to the Yokohama Country and Athletic Club.  It has little to do with their having a strong side (they do), or with the distance of the journey to get there (it's quite far for most of us); rather it's an unmistakeably musty whiff of conceit.  Whether that conceit is real or imagined is, of course, something that we can leave to the multi-million-earning clinical pyschologists but seeing as bugger-all clinical pyschologists play footie - and the ones who do probably play for YCAC - it's by the by.
The day was glorious, the pitch was in its customary good nick (there have to be some benefits to immersing oneself in imperiousness, and listening to plummy accents whilst trying to spot the Raj-era safari suits doesn't qualify), and a healthy squad of 15 was primed.

TGRFC 69 Girls (GRFC)  17

ImageThe Tokyo Gaijin began their Autumn campaign in impressive style last Sunday, crushing the Girls 69-17 in sweltering heat at the Asahi Shimbun Ground. With some late team changes and a mere 45 minute warm-up, the Gaijin set off to what is becoming an almost habitual shaky start with missed tackles and eventually conceding the first try marring what was to overall become a clinical performance.

This club owes a great many things to Takeshi Takeda, but infallible administration is not one of them. Due to a clerical error in which, as so often happens, the word Saturday was mistaken for Sunday, the Gaijin lost a third of their most experienced operators before the tour even began. And that was back in the days, meaning the day before we left, when we thought we were only registered for the 10’s.

GAIJIN ROUNDED UP THE SEASON PDF Print E-mail

Wednesday, 30 June 2004

ImageTokyo Gaijin rounded up the season with a mini triangular tournament at the Mitaka fields which might or might not serve as a concrete excavation quarry during the week.

The two worthy opponents: Mitaka R.F.C. and Girls - the former having made sure that their home pitch was immaculately raked, and the latter presumably imagining that their name is quite hilarious for a rugby side.

The first outing against Mitaka was, by all accounts, bad. They were fast and fit and exploited some naive back-three defence with good kicking by their fly-half, Harry Highpants (perhaps not the name his mother gave him).I can say that because I am the supposed back-three general. Sadly, my stripes came loose in the gravel. Having nullified a potential area of exploitation, the scrum, by conveniently "not having any front rowers" and requesting 'Golden Oldies' (no pushing), they proceeded to get plenty of clean ball out to their quick backs and scored several tries down the wings.

Rokko East RFC 25 Tokyo Gaijin 0

After the blow of last week’s Tokyo Cup final defeat, the Gaijin were determined to enjoy themselves in this end of tournament play-off. And with some rare sunshine burning off the bacteria from the otherwise swampy Kizooch field, there was a renewed appetite for the raw-boned thud of contact.
